É-me pedida uma marcha atrás.

Imagem
Mentalmente fecho portas e ...

Live yoga off the mat

Imagem
So, I’ve decided to put my yoga practice on hold. After 7 years of ashtanga, I switched to yin yoga (for about two weeks) and currently I am practically not practicing at all except for the few poses that I do on my mat. It may sound odd why on earth would I leave behind something so important to me. Truthfully speaking, I am not. I’m not leaving yoga. I am leaving the way I used to see yoga and how I felt I should live it. There’s a saying from Master Yoda where he advises us to “let go of everything we fear to lose”. I had almost always been afraid of losing everything that I thought my body had accomplished. The strength, the flexibility, the dynamic, the discipline. All these things that I believed were making me an amazing person. The thing is I was never better nor worse because of it. We use our body to go deeper like a kind of temple that we have to gain access in order to realize things about ourselves that otherwise we probably would have missed. I am so glad that my yoga...

Novo Ciclo

Esgotei-me na pressa, agarrei-me ao folclore, … Não se atinge a ...

Expect nothing

I went to yoga yesterday but it felt different. Nowadays it always feels different. One of my longest relationships has been with yoga. It started 7 years ago. We have had good and bad moments. I went from wanting nothing else but to practice, practice, practice to having to force myself to go to the shala, and the other way around. I hit the bottom several times, I filled myself with disappointment and allowed my ego to get the best of me. But then I would come back and try again. Every thing that was supposed to happen did happen. A mix of joy and tears, trust and disbelief. I had the uauuuu moments and the crappy moments. I did great and I did poorly – all entirely necessary. But relationships are meant to evolve and change. It’s natural! Truly speaking, I’ve lost my addiction and I’m happy for that. It is when we lose the addiction that we can start healthy relationships. Furthermore, my inner child - that was once so lost - is now content with what is, with how fa...

Stop and breathe

Imagem
More than one person has told me recently that I do not listen nor accept advice from anyone. Any kind of criticism can be hard to handle but I have to admit they are probably right. I always wondered how could anyone see something in me that I do not see or realize something about me that I have not yet realized. And then it hit me. We usually don't look to ourselves because it can be very painful to look deeply into our true nature. So yes, I don't always listen. I don't even listen to my own breath. As a yoga practitioner I should. I should take the same to listen. And I should take the time to breathe calmly instead of rushing things. My yoga teacher always says: the breath will take you there, not the muscles. But it is easier for me to rely on my muscles, as it is easier to avoid the things I cannot handle with, as it is easier to run away when things get too messy. I have become a little runaway without noticing it. It is time to stop. My fears are waiting for me ...

Just breath

Imagem
Today I went to the shala. As I was heading there my mind was wondering how on earth would I be able to practise. The physical pain was just one of the problems. I felt tired. My mind was tired. My heart was tired. But off I went. Did full primary series and a few postures from the intermediate. When I finished I was calm and felt like I had done everything I was supposed to do. And then it hit me, why I practise. The almost two hours of my day that I spend on my mat are probably the only moments when I am truly myself. I let go of my emotional worries. I forget about my problems and disappointements. I devalue my struggles. None of it matter. I get so connected with my body and my breath, I feel so close to my soul that I actually enjoy being on my own company. I don't compare myself to others. I understand that I'm no better but I'm no worse either. And above all,  I realize that no one, not a single person can give me a stronger love than the one I owe to myself. When I...

À procura da simplicidade

Imagem
Quero calma. Procuro o simples, a beleza da simplicidade. Estou a esforçar-me por encontrá-la.

Open the heart

Imagem
Yoga postures that imply opening the chest are hard for me. I've said this so many times and I've shared so many times with my friends my insecurities about these postures that eventually I came to believe this was the ultimate truth. Some asanas will test our balance. Some will test our strength. Others (the hard ones for me) will test our emotions and the way we deal with our feelings. This is how yoga connects with life. We face ourselves in the mat. We face our demons. We face our fears. And yes, that's hard. No doubt. But realizing this may be one first step to make amends. My difficulties in my yoga practice have made more aware of my difficulties in life. I already knew WHAT was a struggle, but not necessarily WHY. Opening the chest is showing your heart to the other. Letting people see it, touch it. Being exposed and feeling vulnerable. I don't like that. Nobody likes to feel vulnerable because we usually associate it with weakness. That's why it is...

Surrendering

Imagem
I admire so much those people that see the good in everything, that get up on their feet after every fall, that can keep a smile on their faces despite their harsh life, that don't complain nor feel sorry for themselves. Self-pity is never the answer, I should know by now. A good friend of mine advised me to just surrender to life. Life knows better what we need than we know ourselves, he said. Surrendering is not giving up. Surrendering is overcoming our fear of losing, of falling, of failing, of getting hurt, of loving back. Surrendering is trusting that we're being led to where we are supposed to be, that we're getting the experience we need, the time is always right, the moment is always right, it is right when it shines, it is right when it rains... While I was thinking about this I remembered a yoga pose that I practise daily in ashtanga yoga. It is called prasarita padottanasana c. When we start practising this posture with the help of a yoga teacher, our h...

O que faço aqui?

Imagem

On yoga practice

Imagem
I may not be the most dedicated student. I know I’m not the most disciplined student. I may be lazy and I get so overwhelmed by my own problems that sometimes is unbearably to practice. I get disconnected. My breath becomes irregular. My focus gets lost. And there I am: stiff body and stiff mind. Yoga is an invitation to heal. And as we practice, all the struggles, the pain and suffering that lay deep down inside us, eventually comes to the surface. That’s when the knees start to hurt, and the arms, and the legs and the wrists, and then everything aches and we feel like we’re stuck into an old man or old woman’s body. The beauty of this is that we are being given the opportunity to improve ourselves, to become more conscious, to become aware of all the parts of our soul that still need to be polished. With time, method and devotion, we experience the true connection with ourselves, with who we really are, that part of us that is not subjected to criticism nor self...

Yogi path

Imagem
My first yoga practice was on 2012 with my dear Isa. I was amazed. This would be the first of many practices. I always thought one day I would change my attention to something new. It had been like this for a long time. Surprisingly or not I’ve discovered that when it comes to yoga, I’m pretty faithful. Nevertheless, I’m not the student that practises 6 days a week. I’m not the student that takes the time to breath and accepts the difficulties easily. I’m not the student that practises no matter what, despite wishing I was. I’m not disciplined and my mind takes the best of me most of the times. Well, I am who I am and if yoga is a way of acknowledging who we are, I guess that accepting my limits is part of the process. Accepting that limits exist but also accepting that I can overcome those limits. Nothing is what it seems. We can see the physical improvement but it is harder to realize the internal changes. Have you ever had that “click” moment when you know that somethi...

Ana Jácomo (Jornalista e Escritora Brasileira) #internagrowth #ashtangayoga #anajacomo #sirsasana

Always changing

Imagem
I’ve always had those “another step” moments while doing my yoga practice. These are specific moments. I know that every day is different, but some differences click inside. I do not always fully understand what has actually happened. It may be the understanding of the posture but sometimes it is something more emotionally related. These last two weeks I’ve been questioning everything, really every…thing. I look like one of those rebels without a cause as I’m not even sure what I am rebelling against. And off course I’ve been questioning my own practice. I know there are things that need to change but I’m not ready to face the consequences. We all need to face our demons especially when we’ve been running away from them for too long. My demons are there when I practice, are there in my mind, are there goofing around and saying “you’re not good enough, you’ll never be good enough.” I know that yoga is not about what you see with your eyes but what you realize with your soul. ...
